It’s not so different when an employee starts at a new company. The onboarding process is an organization’s chance to demonstrate to new hires that the promises of the recruitment phase were on target.

I have spent many years working with companies, helping them nurture corporate cultures and foster positive work environments. Both large and small businesses have challenges in managing an ever-changing cultural landscape. In larger corporations, you’ll usually see very well-defined corporate cultures (though they might not be aligned with business goals and objectives). In small to mid-size businesses, the picture of corporate culture may get foggy over time.

It would appear the dark days of recession downsizing have given way to rapid hiring, showing signs that the economy has turned a corner. But ripples from the past are still in effect. Organizational infrastructure at many companies, so changed by recent challenges, is being rebuilt in new ways. This is for the most part positive news, but when a company is itself evolving, how does it impart its culture, expectations and processes to both new hires and incumbent employees?
